On June 10, FAW Toyota officially launched its all-new mid-size electric SUV, the bZ5, in the Chinese market. The company introduced four initial variants of the vehicle: the 550 JOY, 550 PRO, 550 PRO Smart Drive.
In line with Toyota’s ambitious electrification strategy, the bZ5 lineup is designed to cater to diverse user needs, boasting five core value pillars that include all-around aesthetics, comprehensive safety, robust all-terrain driving assistance, an immersive smart cabin, and full-spectrum QDR (Quality, Durability, and Reliability)—the company's renowned standards in automotive excellence.

The bZ5 models are built on the foundation of Toyota’s extensive expertise in electric vehicle (EV) technology, with an emphasis on comfort, safety, and high-tech features. The entry-level 550 JOY comes equipped with a high-capacity 200 kW electric motor, providing a CLTC-rated range of 550 kilometers. The 550 JOY’s exterior is sleek and modern, featuring an integrated 15.6-inch central touchscreen that serves as the hub for navigation, multimedia, and vehicle settings. Additionally, it supports 5G connectivity for instant smartphone pairing, allowing seamless access to digital services.
For enhanced driving pleasure, the 550 JOY also includes an AI-powered voice assistant for hands-free control, a panoramic sunroof measuring 1.44 square meters, and a 3,300W vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature, enabling users to charge electronic devices directly from the vehicle. The cabin is equipped with a PM2.5 and CN95 air filtration system, offering a cleaner and healthier interior environment. Furthermore, the 550 JOY is equipped with keyless entry, high-definition reverse camera with background music integration, and an intelligent safety suite incorporating millimeter-wave radar, ultrasonic sensors, smart cameras, and 10 TSS (Toyota Safety Sense) driver-assistance features.
Building on the 550 JOY, the 550 PRO variant introduces additional luxury and convenience features. Among the upgrades are a cabin biometric monitoring system, capable of detecting if any passengers are left behind. In such cases, the vehicle triggers hazard lights and horn alerts within 10 seconds, automatically activates the air conditioning, and sends notifications to the driver’s smartphone within 5 minutes. These enhancements ensure both the safety of the passengers and peace of mind for the driver.
Externally, the 550 PRO is further enhanced with 21-inch wheels, full-width LED positioning lights, and a multi-layer acoustic windshield glass designed to reduce road noise. The panoramic sunroof has been upgraded with a silver coating and Low-E film to provide better heat insulation and a more comfortable interior climate. The infotainment system is enhanced with additional navigation, entertainment, and productivity functions, while the vehicle’s safety suite is expanded with features such as PKSB (Parking Support Brake), further bolstering the bZ5's intelligent assistance capabilities.
Safety is paramount for Toyota, and the 550 PRO incorporates five millimeter-wave radars, six ultrasonic sensors, and four surround-view cameras, enabling a PVM (Panoramic View Monitor) system for real-time 360° monitoring. This provides the driver with a comprehensive view of the surroundings, ensuring safer parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.
For customers who demand even more range and advanced features, the 630 PRO is the flagship variant of the bZ5 lineup. With an extended range of 630 kilometers—an additional 80 kilometers compared to the other variants—the 630 PRO is designed to cater to long-distance travelers who need a reliable, high-performance EV.
The 630 PRO also adds a power liftgate with a memory function, offering enhanced convenience when loading or unloading cargo. Whether you're hauling groceries, sports equipment, or luggage, this feature makes the experience easier and more user-friendly.

FAW Toyota’s commitment to safety is underscored by the bZ5’s exceptional crashworthiness. The model has undergone a rigorous testing process, including 115 different crash test scenarios, surpassing industry standards for safety. Every model in the bZ5 range comes equipped with nine SRS airbags, offering multiple layers of protection for all occupants.
The bZ5’s battery safety is also a top priority. The vehicle features five protective layers to ensure the integrity of the battery pack, including an energy-absorbing body structure, non-conductive casing, a bottom-mounted integrated cooler, insulated coolant, and a multi-level battery monitoring system. To further enhance reliability, the bZ5’s redundant systems cover key functions such as braking, parking, steering, and electronic controls, ensuring that the vehicle remains operational even in the event of component failure.
The launch of the bZ5 marks a significant milestone in FAW Toyota’s EV journey. With its impressive range, advanced features, and Toyota’s hallmark quality standards, the bZ5 is poised to make a strong impact in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Combining sleek aesthetics with cutting-edge technology, comprehensive safety, and intelligent assistance features, the bZ5 is a vehicle designed to meet the diverse needs of modern consumers, from everyday urban drivers to adventurous road-trippers.
As part of its broader strategy to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market, FAW Toyota has made the bZ5 available in four carefully curated variants to suit different preferences and budgets, with prices starting at 129,800 yuan. With these competitive offerings, Toyota aims to further strengthen its position as a leader in the evolving automotive landscape.
As more automakers pivot toward electrification, the bZ5 represents Toyota’s commitment to shaping a sustainable, innovative, and safe future for electric mobility.
